Get ready to SURF!
- The SURF Proposal Writing Workshop will be coming up soon. If you’re feeling unsure about where to search for information on your topic, the library can help. Not clear about locating the papers of a potential mentor? Looking for the latest findings on a particular subject? Caltech librarians can steer you towards the right databases with helpful searching tips. Contact your house librarian who can set up an appointment for you individually or as a group, your choice. February 22nd is the deadline for SURF applications this year.
- As researchers and potential authors of scholarly papers, you might want to take a look at
The Right to Research is a student guide to issues in research. It was written by an undergraduate for undergraduates. You can also pick up a paper copy of the guide from any Caltech library.
- The library has begun the process of updating its printing equipment. Stay tuned for future updates.
- Heard of Safari Books Online? The library subscribes to many in the Safari Basic Tech collection. You can view all the titles here.

Mid-terms are behind you, and Thanksgiving break lies ahead

- Above is a picture of a new book cabinet on campus, displaying the work of Caltech faculty. The first undergraduate to identify its location, and the titles of the books by Cindy Weinstein,J. Morgan Kousser, John Brewer, Catherine Jurca, and Jean-Laurent Rosenthal will win a $50 Amazon gift certificate, sponsored by the library and an anonymous academic division. Please email lindsay@library.caltech.edu with your entries, starting Saturday, November 14th.
- Web of Knowledge is one of over 200 databases the library subscribes to. It is extremely powerful, and a terrific source for journal articles. If you are curious to learn about the research a faculty member has done, this is a good place to start. Say you'd like to read up a bit on the work of Rudy A. Marcus, the Arthur Amos Noyes Professor of Chemistry. On the Web of K search page, enter his name in a search box, and select "author." Then enter 91125, Caltech's zipcode, in another search box, and select "address."
You should come up with 241 hits; if you don't, see your house librarian.
- Interested in e-books? The library is starting to collect them. This guide will tell you more.
- And here are some of the latest additions to the Leisure Reading Collection, located on the 3rd floor of the SFL. If you're interested in taking a look at the latest additions to the entire library collection, look here.
